What is the Ketogenic Diet and why we are doing it!
Hello world. If you have followed our blog at all, you know a few things about us. WE LOVE SUGAR. WE LOVE FLOUR. WE LOVE CARBS. Carbs carbs carbs. Seriously though. Carbs are our main staple. Let's just say those carbs haven't been very kind to our physiques. Our sister did this crazy diet awhile back and we all thought she was nuts because she was eating heavy cream and losing weight at the same time. A friend of Cassie's told her about the diet because a "side effect" is that infertility issues were no longer an issue. Cassie was immediately sold on the idea! This crazy diet is called Keto....and we jumped on the Keto train on November 17th. Smart right???? We are being sarcastic here....Who starts a low carb diet a week before Thanksgiving seriously?
Before I go any further....I mentioned we are addicted to sugar right? I feel like I can't adequately explain how much we love it. That's all.
Anyway, what is Keto or the Ketogenic diet? Well....essentially it is a low carb, moderate protein, and high fat diet. Not a typo there. You did just read that right. High fat. The idea behind Keto is by eating low amounts of carbs and high amounts of fat, you throw your body into Ketosis (do not confuse this with diabetic ketoacidosis). Essentially you are teaching your body to use fat as its energy source instead of carbs. What kind of food do we eat? Meat (Bacon, chicken, steak, fish...pretty much all meat goes), cream, cream cheese, avocados, lettuce, small amounts of berries, cheese--things of that nature. What we do not eat? Sugar, any wheat products, and no high carb veggies or fruits.
Your diet should consist of healthy fats. If you are eating as much fat as recommended, the sugar/carb cravings are actually manageable. When I tell you that I have NEVER EVER stuck with a diet for more than 3 days, I'm not exaggerating. I have never been able to make it over the sugar cravings. I get so crabby and irritable that I tell myself I would rather live my life happy and plump than skinny and miserable.
We are in a place now where we can manage the sugar cravings and out of the "keto flu". The keto flu is what you experience as you are having withdrawals from the carbs. It is uncomfortable, but manageable. I personally experienced achy knees, heart palpitations, and nausea. This sounds scary, but I feel loads better than I did before starting this diet. You just need to make it past the first few weeks. We will touch more on the keto flu later.
If you are like me, you want hear the results before anything else. Here you go:
Sadie: In a week and a half I have lost 7.2 pounds and 4 in. collectively!
Cassie: 5 1/2 pounds and 3 inches collectively around the midsection to hips.
David (Sadie's husband): 8 pounds and 1 3/4 in.
