What I learned from being the "boss"
My sister and I ran our day spa and salon for 6 1/2 years. It truly was fun but so hard too! Running your own business is very time consuming...all consuming really. I always had it on my mind no matter where I was. Technology now allows us to be accessible 24/7 so I always felt like I needed to have my phone right by me in case some one at work needed to get a hold of me.
Anyone that has worked retail or in the service industry knows how tough it can be. As hard as you try you cannot make each person happy. It is the ultimate goal but it just won't happen 100% of the time. As the boss I had to take care of unhappy clients. We received complaints via email and phone. If I got an email over the weekend it would completely ruin my whole day. I didn't know how to leave work at work. Some complaints that we received were valid...others were not in my opinion. Either way you still tried to make that client as happy as possible by rectifying the situation. I always braced myself when a client called to complain. The reason? There are some mean people in this world! I saw an ugly side to many people. Downright nasty! (Side note: when a client called to complain and they were kind I would always thank them for being so gracious and allowing us to fix the problem) This all leads me to the lesson I learned from being the boss. It is this:
We are all human! Be nice! There is no reason why you need to be rude to some one to get what you want. There were times where I felt like the client thought they had to be rude to get what they wanted from me. Most of the time after they heard me apologize and promise to make it right their voice would completely change to a sing song voice and they sounded like a different person! Life is too short to let a chipped nail ruin it. Treat others with kindness and they will do the same for you! Remember that the human that "wronged" you makes mistakes and isn't perfect.
I would imagine most people in the service and retail industry want to make you happy and will do whatever it takes to make their wrong doing right with you. Remember this before you call to complain next time. Take a deep breath, remind yourself that humans make mistakes, and get the problem taken care of.
I do not have the mentality that everyone deserves a medal and that we should sugar coat things. I do however have the mentality that it is always best to be polite and kind. You will never ever regret being kind.
