DIY letters! Make your inexpensive paper letters look like metal!
I love metal letters! And have recently fallen in love with metal letters spelling EAT in the kitchen. I wanted big letters and didn't want to spend $20-$25 per letter....so I came up with a solution!
Paint the cardboard ones to look like metal! Each letter is regularly priced $9.99 at Hobby Lobby. You can always get a 40% off coupon online, so I used that for one of my letters. I also bought two little things of craft paint. $4 total. I had the black sponge brushes already so I didn't need to purchase those. Total cost for these letters was $30. The ones I wanted were $25 a piece. Had I bought those it would have cost me $75. I saved $45 doing it this way!
Paper mache letters or numbers
Metallic silver paint
Brown or dark grey paint for the edges (optional)
3 Sponge brushes
Polyacrylic finishing spray
**Make Hobby Lobby your one stop shop on this project!
First, I painted all of the letters with metallic silver paint. I wanted mine to look old so I didn't paint them perfectly. If you are not adding brown to the edges, then you will want to take more time and be meticulous on this part. I did a nice thin coat on each letter. Don't forget to get all of the edges.
Next, I lightly dipped the edge of my sponge brush in brown paint. If you get too much, dab it off onto a paper towel. Now, lightly rub the edges of your letters. Take the flat surface of the sponge brush and wipe off excess brown paint and smooth it around so you do not have a harsh line. Don't be too worried about this part. Anything can be fixed...plus it's art! Let it be, however it turns out.
Once all letters have been browned, decide if you like the way they look. I wasn't obsessed with mine yet, so I lightly dipped my brush in the silver and painted over a few of the brown areas to soften them. You don't have to do this if you don't want to. I was satisfied with the way they looked after this step. Finish your project by spraying with a poly-acrylic finishing spray. After letters have dried, hang them up and admire your beautiful work! No one will be able to guess that they are paper! Let me know how your letters turned out! -Sadie
